This custom wood conference table was designed specifically for a college professor’s office — a space that needed to function as an everyday standing desk for solo work, and expand into a full wood conference room table when students and colleagues came in to collaborate on projects.

The solution was a solid ash desk top with integrated expansion leaves built directly into the desktop, extending on a sliding dovetail mechanism. The dovetail joint keeps the leaves perfectly aligned and fully supported when extended, eliminating any sagging or instability — a critical detail on a working surface that needs to perform reliably in both configurations. When not in use, the leaves retract flush into the desk top, leaving a clean, uncluttered surface.

The piece was completed with four coordinating stools, designed and built to complement the table and tuck away neatly when the space needed to function as a private office. Every element — table, leaves, and stools — was finished in the same hard wax oil to ensure a cohesive, unified look.

Substantial slab legs anchor the piece visually and provide the structural integrity needed to support the expanded conference table configuration. Ash was chosen for its strength, open grain character, and natural hardness — qualities that make it an excellent choice for a solid wood conference table that sees daily use as a working surface.
